Learning Objectives

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • select suitable well types for different hydrogeological conditions, considering aquifer characteristics, depth, and expected yield
  • distinguish between and apply different well constructions, including vertical filter wells, horizontal filter wells, and dug wells, based on technical and environmental requirements
  • select an appropriate pumping technology (submersible pumps, centrifugal pumps, multistage pumps, or solar-powered systems) depending on hydraulic conditions and operational needs
  • evaluate the yield and performance of a well using pumping tests and basic interpretation of drawdown behaviour
  • understand the influence of drawdown cones on well spacing, interference effects, and long-term abstraction planning
  • correctly interpret well completion designs, including screen placement and filter gravel selection, and identify common design errors
  • implement effective well protection and drinking water protection measures to prevent contamination and maintain water quality over time
  • consider energy efficiency, lifecycle costs, and operational reliability when designing and operating groundwater abstraction systems
  • link technical design decisions with long-term sustainability and system resilience in drinking water supply planning
