Description
Not all groundwater can be used directly as drinking water without treatment. Even when groundwater is of relatively good quality, it may still contain dissolved substances, gases, or microorganisms that must be removed or reduced to meet drinking water standards.
Water treatment ensures that raw water is converted into safe, hygienically sound, and consumer-acceptable drinking water. The required treatment level depends strongly on raw water quality, geological conditions, and local environmental influences.
In modern drinking water systems, treatment is designed as a multi-barrier approach, where several processes work together to ensure consistent water quality and safety.
Typical Treatment Processes
Water treatment may include one or a combination of the following processes:
- Aeration
- Sand filtration
- Activated carbon filtration
- Ultrafiltration
- Nanofiltration
- Reverse osmosis
- UV disinfection
- Chlorination
Each process targets specific types of contaminants and contributes to overall water quality stability within the system.
Objectives
The main objectives of drinking water treatment are:
- removal of suspended solids and particulate matter
- reduction or elimination of chemical contaminants
- removal or inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms
- improvement of taste, odor, and overall aesthetic quality
- stabilization of water quality to ensure safe distribution and storage
