Description
A drinking water supply system does not end with commissioning. In fact, commissioning marks the beginning of the operational phase, where long-term performance, safety, and reliability are continuously ensured through structured operation and monitoring activities.
During operation, all system components must function together under real-world conditions, including fluctuating demand, seasonal variations, aging infrastructure, and unexpected failures. Without consistent monitoring and management, even well-designed systems can gradually lose performance and water quality stability over time.
Operation and monitoring therefore form the continuous control layer of the entire drinking water supply system.
Essential Tasks
To ensure stable and reliable system performance, the following core operational tasks must be carried out continuously:
- Water quality testing across the system (source, treatment, storage, and distribution)
- Regular infrastructure inspections of wells, pumps, reservoirs, and pipelines
- Preventive maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components
- Structured documentation of operational data, incidents, and maintenance activities
- Continuous staff training to ensure correct operation and response capability
- Development and maintenance of emergency planning and response procedures
- Monitoring of pressure, flow rates, and system performance indicators
Objective
The main objective of operation and monitoring is to ensure a long-term safe, stable, and reliable drinking water supply.
This includes:
- maintaining consistent drinking water quality from source to consumer
- ensuring continuous system availability under all operating conditions
- detecting and correcting problems at an early stage
- extending the lifespan of infrastructure through preventive action
- improving overall operational efficiency and reducing long-term costs
- maintaining high system resilience against failures and emergencies
