Checklist 3: Reservoir Design

1. Reservoir Configuration

The reservoir system must be designed with at least two chambers to allow flexible operation, maintenance, and cleaning without interrupting water supply.


2. Storage Time Control

☐ Retention time below 72 hours

Water retention time must be limited to avoid deterioration of water quality, including microbial growth, temperature effects, and loss of disinfectant residual.


3. Hydraulic Performance

☐ Proper hydraulic mixing ensured

Reservoirs must be designed to guarantee continuous water movement and prevent stagnation zones, short-circuiting, or dead zones within the storage system.


4. Access and Safety

☐ Secure access provided

Safe and controlled access must be ensured for operators, including protection against unauthorized entry and compliance with operational safety requirements.


5. Ventilation System

☐ Ventilation installed

Proper ventilation must be provided to maintain air exchange, prevent condensation, and support hygienic operating conditions inside the reservoir structure.


6. Cleanability

☐ Cleaning possible

The reservoir must be designed so that full cleaning and inspection can be carried out without structural limitations or long service interruptions.


7. Overflow Protection

☐ Overflow provided

An overflow system must be installed to prevent flooding, structural damage, and contamination risks during overfilling events or control failures.


8. Emergency Storage

☐ Emergency storage considered

Sufficient reserve volume must be included to ensure continued supply during peak demand, maintenance periods, or unexpected system disruptions.
