Description
In coastal regions where freshwater resources are limited, seawater can be used as a drinking water source through a process known as desalination.
Seawater is abundant and provides a virtually unlimited water resource for many countries. However, because seawater contains high concentrations of dissolved salts and minerals, it cannot be consumed directly and requires advanced treatment before it becomes suitable for drinking water.
Desalination has become increasingly important in arid and water-scarce regions, particularly where groundwater and surface water resources are insufficient to meet demand.
How It Works
Seawater is collected from the ocean through specially designed intake systems.
Before desalination, the water typically undergoes pretreatment to remove:
- Sand
- Suspended solids
- Organic matter
- Algae and marine organisms
The most common desalination technology is:
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
High-pressure pumps force seawater through semi-permeable membranes that remove dissolved salts and other contaminants.
After desalination, the water is usually:
- Stabilized
- Remineralized
- Disinfected
before entering the drinking water supply system.
