Description

Surface water includes water sources that are located above ground, such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and impoundments.

Many large cities and metropolitan regions depend on surface water because it can provide very large quantities of water. In some areas, surface water is the only available resource capable of meeting growing water demands.

Unlike groundwater, surface water is directly exposed to weather conditions, environmental influences, and human activities. As a result, water quality often fluctuates significantly and usually requires more extensive treatment before it can be supplied as drinking water.

How It Works

Surface water is collected from:

  • Rivers
  • Lakes
  • Reservoirs
  • Artificial impoundments

The raw water is transported to a treatment plant where physical, chemical, and biological contaminants are removed before distribution.

Depending on water quality, treatment may include:

  • Screening
  • Coagulation and flocculation
  • Sedimentation

  • Activated carbon treatment
  • Disinfection
