Learning Objectives 

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • explain in detail all major components of a drinking water supply system, from water source (e.g. groundwater) through abstraction, treatment, storage, transmission, and distribution to the consumer tap
  • understand the full planning and implementation process of a new drinking water supply system, including technical, hydraulic, and operational considerations
  • select and justify appropriate technical solutions for water abstraction, treatment processes, storage systems, transmission options, and distribution networks based on system requirements
  • evaluate and apply redundancy concepts to improve supply reliability, operational security, and system resilience under failure or emergency conditions
  • identify, analyze, and avoid common planning, design, and operational mistakes that can negatively affect water quality, pressure stability, and long-term system performance
  • understand the critical importance of water quality protection, hygienic safety, and operational reliability throughout the entire lifecycle of a water supply system
  • follow structured, real-world decision-making processes by working through a realistic system design and implementation example
  • assess and evaluate a drinking water supply system as an interconnected and interdependent whole, where each component influences overall performance and sustainability
