Learning Objectives
After completing this module, participants will be able to:
- understand the role of water resources as the foundation of every drinking water supply system
- identify the main types of drinking water sources, including groundwater, spring water, surface & lake water, and seawater
- evaluate the advantages, disadvantages, and typical applications of different water sources
- understand the factors that influence water availability, water quality, and long-term sustainability
- recognize common risks associated with different raw water sources
- select appropriate water sources based on local conditions and project requirements
- understand the importance of source protection and sustainable resource management
- assess drinking water sources as the starting point of an integrated water supply system
- identify common mistakes in source selection and resource assessment
- apply basic principles of water resource evaluation through practical examples and case studies
This module provides a foundation for all subsequent modules by introducing the different water resources that can be used for drinking water production and explaining how suitable sources are identified and evaluated. Participants will gain a broad understanding of where drinking water originates and which technical, environmental, and operational factors must be considered before planning a water supply system.
