Description

Microbiological contamination is one of the most significant risks in drinking water supply systems. Harmful microorganisms can enter water sources, treatment facilities, storage reservoirs, or distribution networks and may cause illness if consumed.

Unlike many physical or chemical contaminants, microorganisms are usually invisible to the naked eye. Water can appear clear and still contain disease-causing organisms. For this reason, microbiological safety is a primary objective of every drinking water system.

Several groups of microorganisms are relevant for drinking water hygiene and public health.

Bacteria

Bacteria are microscopic single-celled organisms. While many bacteria are harmless, some can cause serious diseases when present in drinking water.

Common microbiological indicators include:

  • E. coli
  • Coliform bacteria
  • Enterococci

The presence of these organisms may indicate contamination from human or animal waste and suggests that pathogens could also be present.

Viruses

Viruses are much smaller than bacteria and can also be transmitted through contaminated drinking water.

Examples include viruses that may cause:

  • Gastrointestinal illness
  • Hepatitis
  • Other infectious diseases

Because viruses are extremely small, they can be more difficult to remove and detect than bacteria.

Protozoa

Protozoa are microscopic parasites that can survive in water and cause disease when ingested.

Important examples include:

  • Giardia
  • Cryptosporidium

Some protozoa are highly resistant to environmental conditions and may require advanced treatment processes for effective removal.

Helminths

Helminths are parasitic worms whose eggs or larvae can be transmitted through contaminated water.

They are more common in regions with inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene conditions.

Although less common in modern drinking water systems, they remain an important public health concern in some parts of the world.
