In this fundamental (101-level) course, participants gain a comprehensive and practical introduction to how a complete drinking water supply system is planned, designed, and evaluated from source to consumer.

They learn how the main system components—water abstraction, treatment, storage, transmission, and distribution—are interconnected and must function together as one integrated system. The course explains how decisions in one part of the system directly affect hydraulic performance, water quality, and long-term operational reliability.

Participants are guided through the essential engineering principles behind system design, including source selection, treatment concepts, storage sizing, pressure management, and distribution network layout. Special focus is placed on understanding how to identify weak points such as missing redundancy, poor hydraulic design, or potential water quality risks.

In addition, the course introduces the fundamentals of safe and sustainable system operation. Participants learn why monitoring, maintenance, documentation, and emergency preparedness are critical for long-term performance, and how these operational elements must already be considered during the planning phase.
